Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that affects many of our patients. Sleep apnea is the result of is the reduction of airflow while one is asleep. Signs of sleep apnea can include gasps for breath and long pauses in breathing while sleeping. Sleep apnea can also cause both quiet snoring and loud, frequent snoring.
You may be at risk for sleep apnea if you are or if you have:
◾Small jaw bone
◾Large tongue or tonsils
There are two types of sleep apnea: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Central Sleep Apnea (CSA). OSA is the more common form of sleep apnea and is caused by an airway blockage. This blockage is usually caused by the collapse of the soft tissue in the back of the throat while sleeping. CSA occurs when the brain doesn’t signal the muscles to breathe because of instability in the respiratory control center.
When left untreated, sleep apnea has been linked to many serious health disorders. These include:
◾High blood pressure
